Intergalactic Trend for Autumn/Winter 2015/16

It could be perceived that there has been a renewed interest in magnetic fields, the solar system and its ever inspiring beauty, as well as atmospheric events, such as aurora borealis and a rare sequence of "Blood Moons". These intergalactic phenomena seem to have influenced a global trend, with colours, patterns, shapes and materials being influenced.

Humans have always had a natural interest in the space, driven by the desire to explore the unknown and discover new worlds, pushing the boundaries of scientific limits. The humankind and science have made it possible to reach the space with suborbital flights, with Virgin Galactic, a U.S. commercial spaceflight company, developing commercial spacecraft and aiming to provide suborbital spaceflights to space tourists. Naturally, this has had an influence on the life that surrounds us, bringing us, in a way, closer to the exploration of the unknown.

Colours

The intergalactic trend plays with the unknown and dark, combined with bright, shiny colours. The sparkling beauty of the stars  is reflected in subtle metallics characteristic of this trend. Iridescence and glitter are the key effects. The colours of this trend are green, vibrant pink and purple, midnight blue, turquoise, gold, silver, black and grey.

Materials

The materials of the Intergalactic trend represent the luxurious emotions that come with space travel. This trend is all about leathers, plastics, metals, crystals and ceramic tiles. The finishes of the materials are smooth, glossy, reflective, opaque and metallic. The gold and silver finishes, characteristic of this trend, represent luxury.

Prints and Graphics

The prints characteristic of this trend consist of either colours blended together to form a representation of the space and natural phenomena in the sky, or the bold colours of the prints are broken up with interjections of black to make them shine bold. The prints have golden or silver highlights throughout.

Interior Design

Design has always marked the present world with references from the past. Today, however, designers are beginning to create for the future now and shaping experiences that are yet to be felt or dealt with. By drawing inspiration from the future, boundaries and limits are removed. The futuristic feeling of the intergalactic trend is being reinforced by metallic and iridescent finishes. These finishes make interiors shine and be the center of attention, like stars in the Universe.

The images below show examples of interiors incorporating the Intergalactic theme. It could be perceived that circles and spheres are greatly involved in this trend, being influenced by stars and planets, as well as the infinity. Plastics, glass, metals and leather are the materials prevailing in these interiors, with iridescent and glossy finishes. In terms of colours, apart from white, different shades of blue, purple, pink, grey and green dominate the scenes. It could also be noted that this trend is not limited to the contemporary-looking interiors, but it also makes part of classical interiors, too, with some touches of contemporary. Apart from materials and colours, the lighting is quite important for this trend, whether it be the LED cove lighting in the colours of the trend, or decorative glass and metal shiny chandeliers, also in the colours of the trend. The possibilities are endless, just like the main inspiration of this trend - the Universe.

Furniture and Accessories

Although the Intergalactic trend has already been adopted by some of the finest names in the industry, it is yet to influence the upcoming furniture designs. The textures and colours of the furniture and accessories are about mixing the cosmic colours, such as greys, blues, purples, pinks, green, black and white with metallic shades and glossy surfaces. Brass, copper and golden finishes could be seen on tableware and accessories, as well as an accent on larger pieces of furniture. Both brushed and polished finishes are characteristic of the furniture and accessories of the Intergalactic trend. The prints include breath-taking, outer space graphics, such as Jan Kath's latest Cosmic collection of carpets. Many furniture and accessories designs are about literal representations of the Moon and planets, such as stools, lamps and ceramic plates. The latest Cosmic Diner Collection from Diesel by Seletti is a selection of the solar system's planets in various sizes, truly transforming the dining table into a cosmic scene. This trend also influences wallpaper designs, creating a fairy-tale, intergalactic atmosphere inside the room.

The Intergalactic trend slowly, but securely takes over the market, whether through planetary plates and cushions or through adding a colourful hint of the galaxy to stools and chairs.
